When to use a derivative sign chart
Use a sign chart when the central task is determining where a function increases or decreases, classifying critical points, or explaining the first-derivative test. It is concise and keeps attention on the sign pattern.
When to use a variation table
Use a variation table when you need values at extrema, one-sided limits, discontinuities, infinities, and arrows that show how the function moves between key points.
What both formats have in common
Both require a correct domain, ordered critical values, and accurate signs of f′. A visually polished table cannot compensate for a missing domain break or an incorrect derivative.
First and second derivative analysis
A third format combines the signs of f′ and f″. It summarizes monotonicity, concavity, and inflection points. Use it when the shape of the curve matters as much as increase and decrease.
Example decision
Suppose a question asks only: “On which intervals is f increasing?” A sign chart is usually enough. If the question asks for a complete study of the function, including limits and extrema, use a variation table.
